Tanna Edler Awarded 2025 Best Outdoor Space by the Interior Design Society

Celebrating TANNA BY DESIGN’S 19th Designer of the Year Award Win!

Once again, I'm honored with the Interior Design Society’s (IDS) Designer of the Year Award, making this our 19th win! Each award is special, but this year feels especially meaningful as we took home the coveted recognition in the Outdoor Space ($50,000 & Below) category, a first for us!

The Interior Design Society (IDS) is one of the country’s leading organizations dedicated to the residential interior design community where designers, industry partners, students, and educators come together to learn, share, and grow.

The annual Designer of the Year (DOTY) Awards gala was held at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans on September 17, 2025 where Tanna Edler was presented with her 19th DOTY award.

Designing outdoor living spaces in the Tri-Cities, WA and beyond has always been a passion, and this award is such a rewarding acknowledgment of the creativity and care we pour into every detail. We are absolutely ecstatic about this milestone and can’t wait to show you some of the exciting new outdoor design concepts we’ve been working on.

Stay tuned, there’s so much more to come!

We took time to “read the room,” or in this case, the outdoors, and let the natural environment guide our design choices. Drawing inspiration from the desert’s unique character, we created a motif that embraces its textures, tones, and rhythms.

This outdoor remodel transformed a dry, uninspired patio in the Southwest into a true desert oasis with personality and purpose with multiple seating and entertaining zones, all within a compact footprint. By laying new travertine, the entire space was refreshed with natural texture and warmth, setting the tone for a cohesive and elevated outdoor experience.

Before the remodel, the space lacked flow, purpose, and comfort. By starting with a clean slate and new travertine flooring, we created a visual foundation that allowed us to divide the space into distinct yet cohesive areas.

A dining zone was positioned to take advantage of shaded moments and easy access to the new grill station, turning mealtime into a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. A separate lounging area with plush furnishings invites relaxation and conversation, while poolside seating encourages sun-soaked downtime or casual entertaining. This strategic space planning not only enhances functionality but also transforms the patio into a true destination, flexible, welcoming, and designed for connection.

Updated, comfortable furnishings created inviting zones for lounging and dining, while a brand-new grill station became the centerpiece, perfect for entertaining and everyday use. Despite the compact footprint, we carefully designed the layout to maximize every inch, seamlessly integrating areas for cooking, relaxing, dining, and enjoying pool time. What was once a forgotten back patio is now a vibrant destination with a vibe, ideal for gathering, unwinding, and making the most of the Southwest lifestyle, all year long.

Each zone was thoughtfully planned to harmonize with the landscape, so that seating, pathways, and gathering areas feel as though they belong naturally within their surroundings. The result is a cohesive outdoor space where every element settles beautifully into place, reflecting and enhancing the desert environment rather than competing with it.

How we budgeted this outdoor space design project

By applying the ‘Good, Better, Best’ approach, we help our clients make smart, balanced choices that align with their $50,000 Outdoor remodel budget. This method allowed us to thoughtfully combine high-end features where they matter most with more affordable selections in other areas, ensuring a stunning, functional result without compromising on quality or style.

What we’re most proud of in this outdoor remodel is how we were able to create a complete outdoor living space on a small footprint, proving that size doesn’t limit style or function.

Through thoughtful planning and design, we carved out distinct zones for lounging, dining, grilling, and poolside enjoyment, all while maintaining a sense of openness and flow.

Every element was chosen with intention, allowing multiple people to comfortably enjoy the space at once without it ever feeling crowded. It’s now a fully functional outdoor retreat that brings people together, encourages connection, and maximizes every inch of the Southwest lifestyle.

Our Outdoor Design Philosophy

English Garden Meets Mountain Escape

It’s the way we blend timeless beauty with nature’s tranquility. Our signature outdoor style is a marriage of romantic English garden charm and the serene feel of a mountain retreat. This pairing has captured the imagination of so many families who crave spaces that are both enchanting and livable.

Think lush greenery, layered plantings, and flowering moments paired with warm stonework, rustic textures, and cozy seating that invites you to linger. These designs create environments that feel like a true escape, while still being an extension of the home. They aren’t just outdoor spaces, they’re destinations for family gatherings, quiet reflection, and celebrations of life’s everyday beauty.

What we love most is how these designs blur the lines between indoors and out. By weaving in natural materials, thoughtful layouts, and garden-inspired accents, families feel like their homes are surrounded by a sanctuary...one that welcomes both relaxation and connection.
